Understanding your Resolutions...

When printing a document you often want sharp and crisp looking images. The way to monitor how suitable an image will be is to look at the image's resolution. The greater the dpi (dots per inch) the better the image quality will become.

However, you cannot just increase the resolution of the image because the image would shrink to accommodate the increase in detail.

For example, If you find an image on the internet the resolution will tend to be around 72 dpi. If you want this to look good on a leaflet the general dpi is 300dpi. In the examples below this would be like making the final image from the first. As you can imagine, the computer doesn't have enough information to reconstruct the image.

Usual resolution for internet purposes
Low resolution, Used for proofing
High resolution, Quality for printed & graphical applications
